Like many families seeking a better life, Niso left Mozambique in search of opportunity. However, after arriving in Diepsloot, she faced similar challenges. Unemployment and daily hardship remained part of her reality. Niso speaks only Portuguese and never learned to read or write in English. Yet, she now shares something she treasures deeply. Her four-year-old son is teaching her English. For her, this moment feels like a gift made possible through the Book & Breakfast Initiative (BBI).
Nourishment That Changes Lives
Since joining BBI, Niso has seen clear changes in her son. Firstly, he has gained weight. Secondly, he is less often sick. Most importantly, he is full of energy. These changes reflect the impact of proper nutrition and consistent care.
Before BBI, mornings were difficult. Often, Niso could only give her son a few coins for amagwenya (fat cakes) and tea. Now, he begins each day with nutritious porridge from BBI. As a result, Niso can stretch her limited resources further.
Looking Toward the Future
Niso is currently seeking employment. Meanwhile, she dreams of working as a kitchen helper in the new year. She hopes to use the English she is learning from her son. In this way, BBI has become a step toward stability, dignity, and independence.
More Than a Meal
The Book & Breakfast Initiative does more than fill bowls. It strengthens children. It eases a mother’s burden. Ultimately, it gives families the space to hope for a better future.
