Enjoying books and reading stories from a very early age is crucial in the development of children. It helps with their ability to understand words, use their imagination and develop their speech. But millions of young children in South Africa have little or no access to books.
To address this, Massmart on Mandela Day, set up a work station at their Head Office to hand-make book chests. Staff took turns cutting the planks, drilling, painting and decorating the book chests. A total of 19 book chests were handmade and 1800 books were added. 19 centres assisted by HOPE worldwide SA, benefited from this generous donation.
Our kids couldn’t have been more excited to receive the books. We strongly believe that by giving children the opportunity to read and expand their imagination we are equipping them for a brighter future. In gratitude, the principal of Sedebeng Day Care centre said “thank you very much Massmart. Our kids are only going to get smarter with these books.” We are very grateful to Massmart for making such a crucial contribution to our ECDs.
