Imagine a 5-year-old boy who goes to bed hungry, and wakes up in the morning without any food to eat before he goes to school. At school, he cannot concentrate in class and during playtime he has no energy to play with other kids. The reality is that in South Africa 1 in 4 children go to bed hungry. In most disadvantaged communities, families can only afford one meal a day or nothing at all. This is why HOPE worldwide SA with the help of its partners, Makro and KFC is committed to reach over 15 000 young and vulnerable children this year by giving them nutritious meals that will help them learn and thrive. This is all made possible through the nutrition programme.

Early childhood development (ECD) has been recognised as the most powerful tools in breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty. The relationship between nutrition, learning and good health shapes the growth of the future generation in a big way. Taking the initiative to ensure that every young and vulnerable child gets a nutritious meal to help them grow to their best potential everyday.

It is concerning that nearly a quarter of South Africa’s children from birth to three years old suffer from stunting, brought on by malnutrition. In some parts of the country there are still a significant number of children who have severe malnutrition and are still dying due to the lack of proper screening.

HOPE worldwide SA recognizes the importance of giving support during a child’s formative years, giving them a nutritious meal and ensuring that they are in good health through proper check-up using MUAC.
