Lorraine: Renewed Strength and Self-Confidence through Service
Lorraine Mosiya has been an integral part of the HOPE worldwide SA team for nearly a decade! She says, “I started as a volunteer serving vulnerable families with food parcels and then went on to establish Parental Support Groups (PSGs) in the community I was living in. I had assisted in both Preschool centres and non-centre-based Early Childhood Development (ECD) projects.“ Through her passion and efforts, she has transformed the lives of many women, men and children.
She remembers “When I was still a community worker, I passed by a house where a mother was spanking her two-year-old child because he wouldn’t respond to her after messing on himself. I got concerned and invited the mother to our PSG. During one of our assessments, we picked up that the child couldn’t talk because he had a speech impediment. His mother was in denial for some time, but we encouraged, her through our self-esteem sessions, to accept her child’s condition and take action.
We referred them to a psychologist, and he started getting help. Eventually, the mother fell in love with our program. She studied an NQF level 5 course in Early Childhood Development (ECD) and opened her own ECD centre! She then studied psychology as she wanted to understand her son more and to support the other parents going through the same experience with their kids.”
Today Lorraine is managing our programmes for the entire Freestate province, a responsibility she is continuing to learn and grow in.
She said “HOPE has equipped me with a lot of exciting experiences, growth and opportunities. For example, since Covid started, it is a bit challenging. We cannot reach out to as many people as we could before the pandemic but amazingly, we are still serving a huge number of people. My attitude in how I look at life has changed a lot from serving. There was a time when I felt like I was drowning in problems but as I would meet daily with our beneficiaries and hear what they were going through, it would revive me and remind me that the mission is not yet accomplished. I’d regain strength, stand, and keep going”
“I love what I am doing because HOPE worldwide is not just an organization, it’s a ministry. I choose to serve wholeheartedly because it is my mission to please God by serving the needy and caring for souls. Nothing obligates me to do what I am doing. It is out of a pure and loving heart for the poor. “
