Hazel Sengani is one of the newest members of our HOPE worldwide SA family but don’t let that mislead you. In the last 10 months she has already coordinated the renovation of 38 preschools around the country in compliance with government norms and standards.
As our National ECD Centre Compliance Coordinator she covers all of ground. She goes from making sure that fencing and ceilings are put up, to checking that toilets, kitchen cupboards and windows are properly installed. “I ensure that preschools have a safe and healthy environment, making it easy for children to learn” says Hazel.
“We work with preschools that are less privileged. Their principals are keen and willing to help children in their community but do not have the resources; they often can’t afford meals for their learners, teachers or infrastructure so we help them to give their learners the best possible start in life”.
Beyond this, she also secures funding for these preschools. “I contact government departments, get their recommendations on what changes they would like to see in these preschools, then focus on renovating those aspects which also helps them get certified and partially financed by the government,” she explains.
Hazel’s journey to helping children in need was sparked by her passion for the Bible.
“When I looked at the scriptures, I noticed a lot of people throughout Bible serving the poor. It’s one of the things that touched me. I wanted to serve like that as well. That was why I joined HOPE. I fell in love with the work that the organization does. What I’ve learnt is that we don’t just renovate centres, we bring hope and change lives”.
